Her middle name, Chishell, was a portmanteau derived from the unusual circumstances surrounding her birth. Her mother was in labor at Shell Station and Chris her attendant was there to help her to deliver her baby. Strause's book dispels the rumors regarding her birth. She told Strause that her mother was having car trouble and she parked at a station. She entered pre-labor while she was at the car station. The attendant in the car helped her reach the hospital. Strause was born in an in-hospital. Her mother divorced from her biological father, who was half Japanese and half Spanish before she knew she was expecting. Jeff is her stepfather. Chrishell Strause missed a full year of middle school because she was confined in a tent. Strause remembered washing her hair in a river, eating food stamps, and hiding her true identity from her classmates. Her parents "struggled with addiction and mental health" and she that was a time, she joined the Worldwide Church of God when she was 10 years old. Strause describes Strause’s mother as independent and self-righteous.
